Longmont

Members of the “Chicago Colony” who settled in the St.Vrain Valley founded Longmont in 1871. The Chicago Colony was a group of prominent Chicago citizens who decided to establish a new settlement in Colorado. Pooling their resources allowed them to complete large projects, such as irrigation ditches and community buildings, much faster than could be done through traditional town-building. Longmont began as an agricultural community and grew to include canning and processing. In 1952, the Federal Aviation Administration chose Longmont as the site for a major air traffic control center. In 1965, IBM built a large plant six miles from town. Today, there is still plenty of open land and a sense of the farming community of the past, but the city now attracts high-tech businesses.

The Old Firehouse Art Center (OFAC) and the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center are a big part of community life in Longmont. The museum features four exhibit galleries, three classrooms and an outdoor courtyard—all dedicated to public art and great views. The OFAC is dedicated to increasing public awareness and understanding of the visual arts through exhibits, lectures, classes and seminars. Locals can also enjoy traditional events such as the Longmont Artwalk, Concert in the Park Series, “Geese Galore,” Taste of Longmont, and the annual Halloween and Christmas parades. Other cultural events are available through the Longmont Theatre Company and Longmont Symphony Orchestra.

The city is home to three public golf courses including Ute Creek, named after the Ute Indians who inhabited the area; Twin Peaks, with elevated and undulating greens; and Sunset Golf Course, a nine-hole executive course. In addition, Fox Hill Country Club provides access to championship golf, tennis, swimming, and social gatherings.

Rocky Mountain National Park provides year-round recreational opportunities. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are very popular in the winter and 355 miles of hiking trails are available during most of the year. Ninety percent of the park is managed as wilderness, making it the perfect get-away to enjoy wildflowers, wildlife and natural beauty. The newly constructed Longmont Recreation Center is a 63,250 square-foot facility with a running track, aerobics room, basketball and volleyball courts, swimming pool, spa and sauna.

Transportation in the area includes Amtrak rail service, Greyhound bus service, and Denver International Airport. Private pilots will enjoy Longmont Vance Brand Municipal Airport, located about three miles southwest of Longmont.
